Will AI recommend your business?
Ask ChatGPT for the best bakery near you. Ask Claude who should redo your fence. Ask Google's AI anything at all. Notice what you did not do: scroll a results page and pick a link.
More of your customers make decisions this way every month. The answer engines give one recommendation, maybe three. Either your business is in that answer or it does not exist for that customer.
How AI assistants choose who to recommend
AI assistants do not rank pages the way classic search does. They synthesize an answer from sources they can read, verify and cite. In practice, they favor businesses that are:
- Readable. Clean pages with clear language about what you do, where you are and who you serve. If a human skims your site and cannot tell what you sell in five seconds, neither can a model.
- Structured. Schema markup (structured data) tells engines exactly what your hours, services, service area and reviews are, in a format they trust and cite.
- Corroborated. Consistent name, address and phone across your site, Google Business Profile, maps and directories. Contradictions read as unreliability.
- Substantive. Real answers to real customer questions on your site. Engines quote businesses that already did the explaining.
The quick self-test
Open any AI assistant and ask it the question your customer would ask, in plain words. "Who is the best [what you do] in [your town]?" Then ask a few variations.
If you show up: good, now protect that position. If a competitor shows up instead, you have found your gap, and it is fixable.
Where to start
Fix the plumbing first: structured data on every page, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings. Then give the engines something worth citing, one honest page per question your customers actually ask.
This is the newest road to be found on, and most local businesses have not paved it yet. Early movers get named. That is the whole game.
